How to Get the Bad Leather Smell Out of Your Furniture
The leather is a durable material. But being so over the years it may turn out to be quite stinky. If you have bought a second-hand leather sofa it may turn out to be with quite the stench of cigarettes and more. For times like those, you may consider giving that furniture a nice refreshment. Here are a few tips how to get the bad leather smell out of your furniture:
Give it some fresh air
Try and take the leather furniture outside, or a place that resembles this as close as possible. Placing the sofa in a well-ventilated room with plenty of sunlight is also a good idea. Give it a thought and do not forget to remove all the cushions as well and place them nearby. The idea behind this is that fresh air and sunlight help release the built in odours. This also removes moisture. Moisture helps to the buildup of mold which releases a nasty smell and is even worse for your health. But, leaving the furniture outside or in a ventilated room for a couple of hours will help clear that as well.
Vinegar to the rescue
Vinegar may come in handy as well. Fill a spray bottle with half vinegar and half water. Then use that bottle to spray the entire sofa. Vinegar helps clean leather and will also remove any bad smell. Make sure to spray the reverse side of all cushions and the area beneath them. Do all this in a well-ventilated room or even outside and give it around 10 minutes to work. After this wipe the vinegar of the leather surfaces. If the leather is still not having a fresh odour repeat the process until success.
Same as like in refrigerators baking soda can help to reduce or completely remove bad smell. Spread the baking soda all over the leather surface, armrests and don’t forget the back as well. Put some of it on the cushions. Let it sit like this for a couple of hours so it can work and then vacuum them. If you can’t remove them push a newspaper between the cushions and sprinkle some baking soda on the paper. Leave it like this for a few days. The paper and baking soda will remove the bad smell in a couple of days after which you can remove it.
If there is mold on the furniture wipe the spots with a cotton cloth and some alcohol. Then let it dry for a couple of hours in a well-ventilated area and the bad smell should be gone.
