How to Clean Sofa Cushions
There are lots of cushion types out there. Most of them are determined by the fabrics from which they are made. So, it’s very important to know well the fabric when you decide to clean the cushions by yourself. Here are some useful tips based on the experience of our experts.
For all methods, the most important part is the pre-cleaning. Make sure to dust the cushion well, remove all hair that may be on it and any other crud that may have accumulated. Do that before even thinking of using any kind of liquid cleaner on them. For most types, a simple vacuum cleaner will get the job done.
Some Cushion covers are even washing machine friendly. That means cleaning the cushions is a lot easier. To protect the colour of the cushion and fabric you should put them on a gentle cycle in cold water. That is of course unless the manufacturer’s tag says otherwise.
For leather cushions, we recommend that you turn to the help of professionals. But, if you wish to try for yourself some commercial cleaners make sure to test the cleaner before applying it on the entire cushion. Do that on a small non-visible patch. You can also use a solution of 1:1 white vinegar to water which will do the trick. Just dump a soft cloth in the mixture and clean the cushion.
If you are dealing with suede cushions we suggest that you pay close attention to it. Put the cushion on a clean part of the floor. Then in a criss-cross pattern vacuum all the dust, dirt, and hair from the fabric. After that with the help of some suede rubbing cloths and suede nap brushes bring back the former shine to your cushions. If the suede has a stain then consider using a 1:1 warm water and rubbing alcohol mixture. Put that in a bottle and then shake it hard. Make sure to be careful and do not apply too much of the solution on the fabrics.
Vinyl covered cushions are cleaned by using a cleaning rag. This is in combination with some hot water and a cup of dish detergent. With it you will be able to wipe the cushion clean.
The Old-fashioned Way
If you want to get old-fashioned why not try the carpet beater approach. To do that you must first take the cushions outside. Just make sure to put a towel or a blanket beneath them so that no grass or dirt can leave stains on them.
